Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy workshop

Gladstone SHS students participating

The past week saw seven of our year 8 students participating in a Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy workshop. Students all arrived at Central Queensland University for an early start and were each assigned a country to represent along with year 8 students from other schools in the area.

After some icebreakers to get to know the other students in their teams, the year 8s were provided with information about some of the major energy sources that countries use and are considering using in the future. With support from university students and the opportunity to work directly with the industry representatives, the teams developed and presented their decisions about how the countries they represented should develop their energy resources into the future. The presentations were all well thought out and students successfully defended their choices with impressive enthusiasm.

It was a challenging and rewarding day for all of the participants involved and everyone involved has developed a new appreciation for the challenges and opportunities facing countries today.
