Tournament of Minds success

Students prepared for the competition ahead

Gladstone State High School hosted the 2013 Capricornia Region’s Tournament of Minds competition on Saturday 31 August. Four Gladstone State High School teams were entered across three divisions: two in applied technology, one in maths engineering and one in social science. Gladstone State High School won in 2 divisions (social science and applied technology) and received 2 honours (maths engineering and applied technology).

Students were required to work together as a team over a number of weeks in their own time, without any outside assistance, to complete a long term challenge, ranging from the creation of avatars, to the construction of engineered sound devices to celebrate a royal achievement. Students found all of this challenging but to their credit persevered and performed brilliantly on the day. Teams also had to perform in a spontaneous challenge on the day and these results were used to calculate the final scores. We were very fortunate to have the services of the Queensland Tournament of Minds Director as one of the judges and another judge who flew up from Brisbane to enable us to host the regional finals at our own school.

One of our teams was invited to participate in the state finals on Sunday 8 September at Griffith University (Nathan Campus) in Brisbane.
