Signature programs

Gladstone State High School strongly supports ‘5 Star’ learning in all its students, whether it is in academic prowess or in sporting, cultural or industrial pursuits.  We believe in challenging young adults in a safe and supportive environment to develop their learning skills and special abilities now and into the future.  We strive to foster the development of programs that meet the needs of our local community and have begun implementing signature programs that will enhance your child’s success in their future careers.  Our teachers attach the highest importance on high quality learning experiences and outcomes for all students and recognise that success involves a partnership between the school, the student and the home.  For these reasons Gladstone State High School is proud to offer its stud​ents the following Signature Programs:

STAR academic program

Students achieving high standards in Primary across a range of subjects will be invited to apply in the program to extend and accelerate their learning in year 7.  New and enrolled students may apply to join the class if their results indicate their ability to succeed in this class; they will be placed on a waiting list until spaces become available.

Laptop program – Learning through technology
A mixed ability class with students who engage with learning using technology. The program will run across years 7 and 8 with all subjects having a strong ICT focus and in years 9-12, the technology will be utilised when required by the students chosen curriculum areas.  All students must have an appropriate attitude, demonstrate good behaviour and effort at all times. (Applications closed, however some places for 2015 still available)
 
Maths academy– maths acceleration program
As an extension from the STAR program, in year 8 students elect their specialty, such as Maths to be accelerated in across the remainder of their secondary schooling, so that they complete all mathematics study by the end of year 11, leaving other options available for year 12.  Other Academies, such as Science will be introduced.

Science academy – science enrichment and extension program
Another extension from the STAR program, in year 8 students may also elect Science to complete their Junior Secondary Science studies by the end of yr 8, ready to commence senior studies in Year 9.  Year 10 extends the students science skills, knowledge and understanding in readiness for specialist subjects in Year 11 & 12 such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering Technology.

Arts academy
A year 8 program for students with an interest and ability in Drama, Dance, Music or Art with a dedication to spending time developing performance skills.


Volleyball school of excellence

A program for all year levels, dedicated to State, National and International competition.  Entry is through trial only, contact Brian Van Der Weide, Head of HPE.

By participating in one of these programs, you child will become:

  • Positively engaged in learning and develop the characteristics that will make learning an integral and valued part of their lives when they leave school
  • Information literate – be able to interpret, analyse, evaluate and apply what they learn
  • Able to acknowledge the importance of certain values, dispositions and attitudes that enable change and curiosity to occur
  • An inquisitive, creative, thinking individual who can communicate effectively
  • A reflective and self-directed learner
  • Prepared for the workforce and/or university
