Initiatives and programs that are undertaken by the Community Education Counsellor :

  • Establish Indigenous Peer Mentors

  • Year 7 - 8 Transition - Semester 2

  • Implement Community Connections –

    • NAIDOC

    • Excursions

    • Promote Healthy Lifestyles

    • Role Models

  • Liaison with Parents / Teachers/ Admin/ Community

  • ATAP - Academic and Talent Aspiration Program (This is similar to Tournament of Minds)

  • Transition Year 12 to Year 13. Tracking  - Jobs/ University/ TAFE

The Community Education Counsellor supports students, parents and the community by:

  • Pastoral Care

  • Acknowledge and promote the talented quiet achievers

  • Facilitate student support

  • Provide educational counselling

  • Provide support to the set planning processes

  • Encourage, recognise and reward students who are moving forward

Curriculum Support

  • Provide cultural knowledge in planning curriculum units

  • Provide advice on cultural and social perspectives

  • Facilitate links with elders and key indigenous community persons

State & Federal Funding

  • Input into funding submissions

  • Input into allocation of indigenous specific funds

  • Be informed of school budgets

  • Negotiate funding for school-based programs to enhance learning

Productive Partnerships

  • Involvement in implementing Education Queensland policies

  • Input into school committees /programs

  • Networking with other  CEC’s and schools to share information and resources

  • Support for other CECs

  • Shadowing/mentoring programs

Community Liaison

  • Facilitate home visits if required

  • Identify and establish links with support services for Indigenous students.

  • Foster and maintain these networks

Cultural Activities

  • Coordinate NAIDOC Celebrations

  • Facilitate the development of activities to enhance indigenous students involvement

  • Assist in providing cross-cultural training for school community

  • Access and provide opportunities to experience and get involved in cultural activities including Indigenous art, Dance, Yarning and Story -telling

Student Support

  • A Support person for teachers

  • Member of welfare/student support groups

  • Involvement in re-entry Process

  • Provide advice on cultural/social information on students

  • Act as an advocate for students
