As Head of Teaching and Learning, currently my role (from a student perspective) is largely around improving the learning environment of our students who struggle in some way with literacy and, to a lesser extent, numeracy. A key component of the role is improving literacy outcomes and increasing independent learning through a number of focussed programs across Year 7 to Year 10.

Students are identified and can be invited into the following programs. All have high behaviour expectations, with the students required to show a commitment to improvement.

Programs include:

  • Skills in Year 7 and 8 – 6 month literacy program over 3 lessons a week with a direct focus on improving writing and interpreting task requirements.

  • Pathways to Success (P2S) in Year 9 – 12 month program over 2 lessons a week. Each class has a slightly different focus depending on the strengths and weaknesses of students, but all look at goal setting and increasing independence.

  •  Education for Living (EDL)in Year 10 – 12 month program over 3 lessons a week which includes out Career Pathways program and a focus on skills for beyond school. There will also be a focus on goal setting, personal management and the literacy and numeracy required beyond school.

  • Right Track Reading is a reading program that has a focus on decoding words. Some students are part of a small group program, while others operate on a 1-1 basis. Generally students will take part in  3 thirty minute sessions a week.

We also have a number teacher aides that provide in - class support and study sessions both before school and during the lunch breaks.
